How to Store a Wedding Dress Before the Wedding

You’ve bought your dream dress and you’re preparing for the big day, but do you have any idea how to store your dress? This is a common issue for brides-to-be so we’ve put together our top tips on how to store a wedding dress before the wedding.

Remove it from any plastic coverings

If you will be storing your wedding dress for more than a couple of days, the first tip is to remove it from the plastic. This is because the plastic does not allow the fabric to breathe properly and so, there is a potential that your dress could become yellowed or stained as the chemicals in the plastic break down and gases are emitted.

Use a cloth garment bag

Although you shouldn’t keep your dress in its plastic covering, you do still want it protected while it’s being stored before the wedding. Therefore, rather than using the plastic covering your dress may come in, we suggest using a cloth garment bag to give your dress that extra layer of protection. Some wedding dresses may already arrive in a cloth garment bag so then you’re good to go!

Hang your dress away from potential damage

This may include any dirt, pets, young children, heat, dampness and direct sunlight. Basically, think of the safest, cleanest spot you know and put it there. It is recommended that you do not put the dress somewhere like an attic or a basement as the air may be damp or musty. However, whichever room you put it in, you need to make sure that it is out of direct sunlight and the temperature and humidity of the room will not fluctuate drastically.

Try not to handle the dress too much before the wedding

We get it – you’ve finally got your hands on the dress of your dreams and all you want to do is look at it every day. However, we would suggest keeping it stored away until the day to minimise any chance of accidents and you should resist handling it too much as this is where marks could appear on the dress.

If accidents happen, get it dry cleaned

If an accident has happened which means your dress has a mark or stain on, we always recommended getting it to a professional wedding dress cleaner as soon as possible. Many sources will say that it is possible to implement a DIY solution and fix it yourself, but this can actually make the damage worse. When it’s one of the most important days of your life, it’s best to leave it to the people who know what they are doing.

Don’t forget to consider post-wedding storage

You haven’t even had your wedding and you’re already being inundated with information about what to do after the big day! However, making sure that your dress is looked after post-wedding is extremely important. To ensure maximum protection, we suggest investing in a professionally supplied acid-free storage box for your dress – let’s just say, an old shoebox isn’t going to cut it!
